Interview with Mia Makela about live cinema. Makela defines live cinema as real-time audiovisual performances that have a long history dating back to ancient shadow plays. Live cinema differs from VJing in that its goals are more artistic versus being attached to club culture. Makela discusses elements and language of live cinema, noting it may not have fixed grammar but could have a «toolbox» of techniques to elicit emotional responses from audiences. Technology is important for live cinema performances but theory and discussion of content are also valuable to avoid works that seem focused only on tools used. Debates are starting to emerge about live cinema as the first wave of artists reflect on their goals and processes.
